Pansy Overview
The name “pansy” is derived from the French word “pensée,” meaning “thought.” In the language of flowers, pansies signify remembrance.
Historical Significance
In the early 19th century, Lord Gambier and his gardener, William Thompson, produced the original pansy hybrid by crossing various species of native violets. This new species was named Wittrockiana in honor of the noted Swedish botanist Viet Brecher Wittrock.
